Macey stepped out of the Staran and into the catacombs beneath Paris. Unlike the last time they'd been here, the whole place was silent, and the piles of bones didn't move at all. That was a relief, she didn't think she could cope with fighting any gashadokuro this time. One god was enough.

"Does anyone remember exactly where the void is?" she asked.

"Yes," Cam answered, and pushed through the small crowd. He led them through the twisted tunnels with ease.

"Will someone make a light before I trip over my own feet?" Izban grumbled.

Flint clicked his fingers, and a couple of balls of flame flickered into life above the Wardens.

They continued walking, the only sounds around them were the clicking of their feet along the floor.

"Where have the lampads gone?" Macey asked after a while. The last time they'd been here, one of the flame people had taken them to where the void had been ripping away their magic, but she didn't sense any of them around right now.

Flint shrugged. "I don't sense anything with fire magic nearby. Maybe they've moved on and found somewhere else to make their nest? If the voids have left an imprint on the world, then it couldn't have been comfortable for them."

"We're here," Cam announced before Macey could respond.

The eight of them fanned out and stared at the black space in front of them. A couple of years ago, the sight would have filled Macey with dread, as it would have meant they'd had to face one of the Mahoun's siblings and save the French lampads. But this time, it was only because of the emptiness around them and nothing more sinister.

"Are we sure we're safe here?" Macey asked.

Amber shrugged. "It's just a theory. But can't you feel the lack of magic in the air?"

Macey reached out to pull magic into herself, and found the beithir was right. She let the connection to the power around her vanish, lest she use it up and leave Flint with none to control the fireballs above them.

"So, what are we going to do about the god?" Macey asked, looking between each of their faces.

Luc's wings flapped, pulling her attention to him. "I've heard rumours that the gods aren't as powerful as they tried to make humans believe at the start. It's why there haven't been any new ones for a long time."

"Wait, so that thing isn't all powerful?" Amber asked.

The daimon shrugged. "There's no real way of knowing if it's true. But there's a chance that it isn't."

"If it isn't all powerful, then it can't have the power to destroy the world," Cam said.

"No," Flint agreed. "And we can trap it in some way. But how?"

"We give it what it wants," Macey said, understanding of how they were going to get through this washing over her in a moment. It relied on everything they thought they knew being true, and a couple of other things, but she was almost certain they could manage it.

All seven of them turned to her, confusion on their faces.
